Comprehensive Training

We provide comprehensive training to all of our volunteers in-house, courtesy of our dedicated and hard-working training team. Our training is based on training material provided by our national offices, and is regularly updated and communicated to our volunteers through ongoing training.

The training you will receive as a volunteer, and the experience you will gain in applying your training, will provide you with an insight into how you feel and think about life, and how others feel and think.

Our training around listening uses techniques broadly similar to those used by professional counsellors, however, Samartian volunteers are trained to neither judge nor tell people what to do. By listening and asking questions, we help people to explore their feelings and to work out their own way forward.

Several volunteers have found that the training and experience they receive as a Samaritan volunteer has been vocationally relevant, as well as satisfying their underlying desire to help people.

New Samaritans receive a certificate upon successful completion of the training and a number of mentored shifts.

The training modules include;

Who we are, what we do.
Focus on listening.
Exploring distress and despair.
Exploring suicidal feelings.
Managing calls.
Managing contacts.
Face to face contacts and follow up.
The written word.
Reflection on learning.
