Some facts and figures

Samaritans receives more contacts from men (53%) than from women (43%). 4% were unidentifiable.

Last year Samaritans received 4.8 million contacts from people in emotional distress by phone, e-mail letter, face-to-face meetings at a branch, through our work in prisons and at local fairs and other events.

All our volunteers work for free, If our volunteers were paid at an average wage of £12.12 per hour, the cost to Samaritans would be more than £29 million per year.

The service is delivered by approximately 17,000 trained volunteers from all walks of life.

Samaritans was founded in 1955 by Dr. Chad Varah

There is someone to talk to

Samaritans is there when things are too much. We’ll listen to how you feel, no matter what the reason is. We won’t tell you what to do and we won’t tell anyone about you or about your call, unless that is what you want. You don’t even have to tell us your name. We can even call you back if you prefer.

We’re here 24 hours a day, every day of the year
